As the last traces of snow melt away and the days grow just a little longer, the farm is beginning to stir from its winter slumber. Our peonies, strong and resilient, are ready to embrace the new season. The high tunnel is almost complete which will help us extend or growing season in the years to come.
During the colder months, peonies enter a deep dormancy, resting beneath the soil’s surface. We ensure they stay protected, covered with a thin layer of compost to shield the tips of their eyes from the harsh cold. The winter rest is essential, allowing them to store up energy for the vibrant blooms we anticipate come spring.
With the arrival of March, the sun’s warmth begins to melt the frost, and the soil temps slowly rise. We start to see the first signs of life—tiny eyes pushing up from beneath the earth’s surface, signaling that spring is near.
We have planted many new peony varieties this year in our fields and display garden.
In preparation for the upcoming season, we make sure that old growth is properly cut back and that the holes in the weed cloth are widened enough to accommodate a gradually widening plant. The wider the plant with an increasing number of eyes, the more flowers we will have blooming on each plant! Some of our peonies grace us with over 20 blooms per plant! Multiply that by many thousands and we have fields of astonishing beauty! It’s a busy time, but every task helps ensure a healthy, vibrant bloom come spring.
Our peony farm will soon be in full bloom, and we can’t wait to share this magical season with all of you. In addition to our luscious peonies, we will soon be waking up our dahlia tubers and planting our little seed sprouts to bring you an array of flowers and foliage throughout the summer and fall months.
Stay tuned for more updates, and let us know how you prepare your own garden for the changing seasons!
